Academic Innovations and Programs (AIP)

The units within Academic Innovations and Programs (AIP) support students and faculty both directly and indirectly, often in overlapping and complementary ways. This integration creates rich opportunities for innovative collaboration and the advancement of high-impact educational practices. Below is a summary of AIP’s areas of responsibility:

Academic Programs & Planning (APP)

Provides oversight of institutional accreditation (WSCUC), internal and external program review, new program development, assessment of student learning (including program-level outcomes, core competencies, and external benchmarks), and provides leadership for the General Education (GE) program, Associate Degree for Transfer (ADT) pathways, and Instructionally Related Activities (IRA). These areas ensure the academic integrity and continuous improvement of Cal Poly’s educational offerings. By supporting curriculum innovation, authentic assessment, and integrative learning opportunities, APP plays a vital role in embedding and sustaining high-impact practices across the undergraduate experience.

Cal Poly International Center (CPIC)

Oversees study abroad and exchange programs, providing students with global learning opportunities and immersive cultural experiences, which are high-impact practices (HIPs) that promote intercultural competence, adaptability, and perspective-taking. CPIP also supports international students and scholars, fostering a welcoming campus environment and promoting cross-cultural engagement. These global programs represent innovative programs and opportunities for students to broaden their academic and personal horizons.

Center for Teaching, Learning, & Technology (CTLT)

Offers professional development for faculty through scholarship-informed workshops and training; service-learning courses; improvement in instructional materials accessibility; and course design centered on universal design principles, student-centered pedagogies, and inclusive excellence practices. CTLT empowers faculty to embed HIPs in their teaching, enhancing student engagement and success through innovative instructional approaches.

University Honors Program (UHP)

Supports academic excellence across all six colleges and seeks to build a more inclusive scholarly community. The program connects high-achieving students with faculty across disciplines, fostering interdisciplinary collaborations and a vibrant intellectual environment. By emphasizing undergraduate research, collaborative learning, and global and civic engagement, UHP aligns with multiple high-impact practices that promote deep learning and student success through innovative academic exploration.

Service-Learning

Integrates community engagement with academic coursework, allowing students to apply their knowledge to real-world challenges while supporting local organizations. It fosters experiential learning, civic responsibility, and collaboration between the university and community partners. Service learning is a high-impact practice that deepens students’ academic understanding through meaningful, reflective, and often innovative community-based experiences.
